Linksys VPN Router RV042 and Wireless Router WRT54G Configuration

A friend of mine requested me to show what kind of router and wireless system I have in my home network; and recorded this video for that purpose. I have this Linksys RV042 as a primary router acting as a gateway to internet, it has four ports in it. One port is connected to the WRT54G where the wireless router is configured to push traffic to the ISP’s IP. The RV is also configured to loan DHCP IP’s. Five laptops is connected to the network through the Linksys WRT54G. The WRT is configured with WPA Personal Algorithm with a WPA Shared Key. Moderate workaround and configuration with both the RV and WRT router is demonstrated. This video is re-uploaded due to corruption of frames inside.

Wireless Router Debricking!

It was bound to happen sooner or later…after more than fifty successful upgrades of cheap little wireless routers to third party firmware, I finally bricked one. In this case, the firmware went into place perfectly. I ended up passing an invalid parameter to the bootloader and this caused the CPU to get stuck so early in the boot process that nothing other than direct communications over JTAG could help. Before debricking any router, be prepared. Get to a forum where there are knowledgeable folks available to help you, be honest about what happened and follow instructions exactly. Almost anything can be recovered if you approach it intelligently and learn from the experience. This router recovered to perfect health and to prove it, I uploaded this entire video through it. In what has to be a delightfully ironic twist, these cut-down Linksys routers with the stock VxWorks based firmware are pretty unreliable as they run out of memory and crash after a few days. This doesn’t get better over time, and lots of these little routers are in the landfill as a result. Although nobody can prove it, it is believed that Linksys cut the memory in these units to stop people running third party firmware on them. That’s where the irony comes in–not only did the third party Linux based firmware authors adapt, they did a better job, producing stable and reliable firmware for these things.

Palm Pre is also a Wireless Router in your palm!

Thanks to the growing Linux developer community along with the many brilliant programmers contributing to unleashing the power of the Palm Pre, you can now access the Internet by tethering your laptops, desktops, WiFi device to the Palm Pre as a WiFi Router! Once you’ve connected to your Palm Pre with root privileges, you now have access to more than just a smartphone, but a potentially powerful handheld linux workstation/server. A wealth of resources for the Palm Pre are now growing and expanding across the Internet. I was able to take any WiFi-capable device that had a browser (eg iPod Touch) at Best Buys and get it to access the Internet through the Palm Pre. You could also get 2 laptops and a wireless printer to all share the same wireless network or internet connection. The Palm Pre can distribute unique IP addresses for each device requesting WiFi connectivity (DHCP). Despite being Palm’s latest and 1st generation device, it’s easy to see now why so many people have already bought or are anxious to get the Palm Pre. The Palm Pre is truly awesome, it’s so useful. No other smartphone except the Palm Pre can function as a Wireless Router!
